2. PACIFIC DUNES. Bandon, Ore. / 888-345-6008 / bandondunesgolf.com. Tom Doak (2001) / 6,633 Yards, Par 71 / Points: 64.8645. The second course built at Bandon Dunes Resort.
3. WHISTLING STRAITS (STRAITS) Haven, Wis. / 800-344-2838 / whistlingstraits.com. Pete Dye (1998) / 7,790 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 64.5043. Pete Dye transformed a dead flat abandoned army air base along a two-mile stretch of Lake Michigan into an imitation Ballybunion at Whistling Straits, peppering his rugged fairways and windswept greens with 1,012 (at last count) bunkers.
4. THE OCEAN COURSE. Kiawah Island, S.C. / 888-854-2924 / kiawahgolf.com. Pete Dye & Alice Dye (1991) / 7,849 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 64.4146. The first course designed for a specific event—the 1991 Ryder Cup—this manufactured linksland-meets-lagoons layout might well be Pete Dye's most diabolical creation.
5. SHADOW CREEK. North Las Vegas, Nev. / 866-260-0069 / shadowcreek.com. Tom Fazio, with Steve Wynn (1990) 7,560 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 64.1319. One of a kind, and maybe Tom Fazio's finest work ever.
6. PINEHURST (N.C.) RESORT (No. 2) 800-487-4653 / pinehurst.com. Donald Ross (9 1902 /Donald Ross & Walter Travis (A.9 1907) Donald Ross (R.1935) 7,588 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 63.9639.
7. BANDON (Ore.) DUNES. 888-345-6008 / bandondunesgolf.com. David McLay Kidd (1999) 6,732 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 63.3123. Maybe not as visually mesmerizing as Whistling Straits (which it beat for Best New Upscale Public Course of 1999), but talented golfers consider Bandon Dunes to be the consummate shotmaker's course, as good a total examination of one's game as there is in America.
8. BETHPAGE STATE PARK (BLACK) Farmingdale, N.Y. / 516-249-4040 / nysparks.state.ny.us. Joseph H. Burbeck & A.W. Tillinghast (1936) 7,468 Yards, Par 71 / Points: 63.1529.
9. ERIN HILLS (Wis.) G. CSE. 866-772-4769 / erinhills.com. Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry & Ron Whitten (2006) 7,731 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 62.8534. Despite the legend spread by many, Erin Hills wasn't designed specifically to host a U.S. Open.
10. SPYGLASS HILL G. CSE. Pebble Beach / 800-654-9300 / pebblebeach.com. Robert Trent Jones (1966) 6,960 Yards, Par 72 / Points: 62.5718. Given the task of designing a course just up 17 Mile Drive from Pebble Beach and Cypress Point, Robert Trent Jones responded with a combination of Pine Valley and Augusta National.

ARCHITECT 1. Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach, CA. ARCHITECT. Jack Neville/Douglas Grant. YEAR BUILT. 1919. The first great American public oceanside course, Pebble benefits from an ingenious routing that brings the player to the ocean’s edge, then onto much higher ground, before returning to the cliffs for the climactic final two holes.
2. Pinehurst (No. 2) Village of Pinehurst, NC. ARCHITECT. Donald Ross. YEAR BUILT. 1907. Donald Ross’s chef d’oeuvre rolls spaciously through tall longleaf pines in the Carolina Sandhills with holes culminating with legendary inverted-saucer greens.
3. Pacific Dunes. Bandon, OR. ARCHITECT. Tom Doak. YEAR BUILT. 2001. This unconventional Tom Doak treasure catapulted him into the spotlight. A slew of par-4s on the first nine gives way to a 3-3-5-4-3-5 start to the second nine.
4. Cabot Cliffs. Inverness, Nova Scotia. ARCHITECT. Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw. YEAR BUILT. 2016. Canada’s top-ranked course is a six-year-old Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw that alternates between big dunes at the southern end and cliffs at the northern end that rise more than 100 feet above the Gulf of St. Lawrence, inspiring Pebble Beach-like awe.
5. Bethpage (Black) Farmingdale, NY. ARCHITECT. A.W. Tillinghast. YEAR BUILT. 1935. The Black intimidates golfers with a sign at the 1st tee that recommends the course “only for highly skilled golfers.”
6. Kiawah Island (Ocean) Kiawah Island, SC. ARCHITECT. Pete Dye. YEAR BUILT. 1991. The blend of tidal marshes, scrub-topped dunes, live oaks and the soothing sound of the Atlantic on every hole make this one of the South’s most memorable playing experiences.
7. Casa De Campo (Teeth of the Dog) La Romana, Dominican Republic. ARCHITECT. Pete Dye. YEAR BUILT. 1971. Founder Alvaro Carta deserves credit for hiring Pete Dye in 1970 to build this centerpiece attraction for his retreat and then allowing him to have nearly three miles of coastline with which to work.
8. Bandon Trails. Bandon, OR. ARCHITECT. Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw. YEAR BUILT. 2005. Several of Coore & Crenshaw’s finest designs are located at hard-to-access private clubs but many of their works thankfully are available to the public, often courtesy of developer Mike Keiser.
9. Bandon Dunes. Bandon, OR. ARCHITECT. David McLay Kidd. YEAR BUILT. 1999. Bandon’s original course is a David McLay Kidd design draped atop craggy headlands above the Pacific.
10. TPC Sawgrass (Stadium) Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. ARCHITECT. Pete Dye. YEAR BUILT. 1981. Some sniff at the artificiality of a course being hewn from a swamp, yet that’s also what makes the Stadium Course stand out from the crowd.
