Best Public Golf Courses 202122: GOLF's Top 100 Courses

ARCHITECT 1. Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach, CA. ARCHITECT. Jack Neville/Douglas Grant. YEAR BUILT. 1919. The first great American public oceanside course, Pebble benefits from an ingenious routing that brings the player to the ocean’s edge, then onto much higher ground, before returning to the cliffs for the climactic final two holes.
2. Pinehurst (No. 2) Village of Pinehurst, NC. ARCHITECT. Donald Ross. YEAR BUILT. 1907. Donald Ross’s chef d’oeuvre rolls spaciously through tall longleaf pines in the Carolina Sandhills with holes culminating with legendary inverted-saucer greens.
3. Pacific Dunes. Bandon, OR. ARCHITECT. Tom Doak. YEAR BUILT. 2001. This unconventional Tom Doak treasure catapulted him into the spotlight. A slew of par-4s on the first nine gives way to a 3-3-5-4-3-5 start to the second nine.
4. Cabot Cliffs. Inverness, Nova Scotia. ARCHITECT. Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw. YEAR BUILT. 2016. Canada’s top-ranked course is a six-year-old Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw that alternates between big dunes at the southern end and cliffs at the northern end that rise more than 100 feet above the Gulf of St. Lawrence, inspiring Pebble Beach-like awe.
5. Bethpage (Black) Farmingdale, NY. ARCHITECT. A.W. Tillinghast. YEAR BUILT. 1935. The Black intimidates golfers with a sign at the 1st tee that recommends the course “only for highly skilled golfers.”
6. Kiawah Island (Ocean) Kiawah Island, SC. ARCHITECT. Pete Dye. YEAR BUILT. 1991. The blend of tidal marshes, scrub-topped dunes, live oaks and the soothing sound of the Atlantic on every hole make this one of the South’s most memorable playing experiences.
7. Casa De Campo (Teeth of the Dog) La Romana, Dominican Republic. ARCHITECT. Pete Dye. YEAR BUILT. 1971. Founder Alvaro Carta deserves credit for hiring Pete Dye in 1970 to build this centerpiece attraction for his retreat and then allowing him to have nearly three miles of coastline with which to work.
8. Bandon Trails. Bandon, OR. ARCHITECT. Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw. YEAR BUILT. 2005. Several of Coore & Crenshaw’s finest designs are located at hard-to-access private clubs but many of their works thankfully are available to the public, often courtesy of developer Mike Keiser.
9. Bandon Dunes. Bandon, OR. ARCHITECT. David McLay Kidd. YEAR BUILT. 1999. Bandon’s original course is a David McLay Kidd design draped atop craggy headlands above the Pacific.
10. TPC Sawgrass (Stadium) Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. ARCHITECT. Pete Dye. YEAR BUILT. 1981. Some sniff at the artificiality of a course being hewn from a swamp, yet that’s also what makes the Stadium Course stand out from the crowd.

GOLF DIGEST AMERICA’S 100 GREATEST 2019 / 2020

Concept It starts at the top of the list, with No. 1 pine valley in New Jersey, where irregular fairways framed by acres of exposed sand present a compelling 18 holes of challenge and reward. Fifty-three years ago, when Golf Digest first introduced the concept of course rankings, Pine Valley was considered the ultimate in penal golf-course architec-ture.

It’s

Estimated Reading Time: 8 mins
1. Pebble Beach – Monterey Peninsula, California. I should preface this by saying, I had lowered my expectations for Pebble after hearing so many people say it’s overrated.
2. National Golf Links of America – Southhampton, NY. Deciding on #1 vs #2 was probably the most difficult decision I had to make with this list. NGLA is one of the most special places I’ve ever been.
3. Merion Golf Club (East) – Ardmore, PA. To put it simply, Merion has everything I look for in a golf course. Unique, fun holes. A bevy of short par 4s, and does all of this while still being strategic, and providing a true challenge and test of golf.
4. Royal Dornoch – Dornoch, Scotland. What’s there to say about Dornoch? It’s one of the oldest courses in the world, and the more courses I play, the more I see course designers that have been heavily influenced by the course.
5. Bandon Trails – Bandon, Oregon. In my previous top 25 list of a few years ago, Bandon Trails was the outright winner. Many were surprised, as traditionally, it’s the lowest ranked of the four courses at Bandon.
6. Los Angeles Country Club (North Course) – Los Angeles, CA. While unfortunately we were only able to experience LACC on one of the wettest LA days on record – it didn’t dampen the experience of one of the best golf courses I’ve ever played.
7. North Berwick – East Lothian, Scotland. Often overlooked by many on Scotland trips in favor for Open Rota courses, North Berwick is one that should never be missed.
8. Castle Stuart – Inverness, Scotland. Castle Stuart is modern links at it’s finest. Infinity greens, risk reward par 5s, and a handful of dramatic holes you simply won’t see anywhere else.
9. Punta Espada Golf Club – Cap Cana, Dominican Republic. And the award for biggest surprise of 2019? Hands down Punta Espada. The trip came together just a week or two before I left, but this course had it all for me.
10. Muirfield Village – Dublin, OH. “Jack’s Place” was so much more than I thought it would be. It felt like “Augusta Jr.” in regards to everything from infrastructure to conditioning, and while a brutal challenge I found the course to be more fun and varied in it’s routing than I’d anticipated.

SCOREGolf’s Top 100 Canadian Golf Courses is the most authoritative ranking in Canada and has been igniting debates every two years since 1988.

What are the best free online courses for beginners??

Coming in at the top of my list of free online courses is LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda) which is one of the most well-established and trusted online course providers. LinkedIn Learning made it into the #1 position because, in my opinion, they cover all the bases.
